Mayor of Waco, Texas passes away; Jackson was active member of NBC-LEO.(Mae Jackson of National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials)(Brief Article)(Obituary) - Nation's Cities Weekly

Mae Jackson, mayor of Waco, Texas, died Feb. 11 at the age of 63.

Jackson was elected mayor on May 15, 2004. Previously, she served two terms on the Waco City Council. She had just been appointed to serve on NLC's CityFutures Panel on Equity and Opportunity at the time of her death. She was also active in the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials, serving on its Board of Directors and chairing the group's policy development.

Jackson had also served on NLC's Public Safety and Crime Prevention Policy and Advocacy Steering Committee. Jackson was a social worker, formerly in private practice, with a special emphasis on children's mental health and family reintegration/maintenance. She was involved in volunteer service with many local organizations including serving on the Board of Directors for the Center for Action Against Sexual Assault (CASA), the Laura Edwards Day Care Center, Mental Health Association, Waco Boys Club, Waco Hippodrome, and Waco Symphony Association.

'She was a wonderful public servant and a great visionary for the city,' said Waco City Manager Larry Groth. 'We will miss her leadership. Please keep her family in your thoughts and prayers.'
