TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF STATE HEALTH SERVICES RECOGNIZES 7 SCHOOL HEALTH PROGRAMS - US Fed News Service, Including US State News

The Texas Department of State Health Services issued the following news release:

The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) recognized seven school districts recently at the Texas School Health Association Conference awards banquet in Austin. The 2005 Awards for Excellence in Texas School Health program is administered by DSHS and funded by the Texas Health Foundation and the Texas Pediatric Society Foundation.

Texas Department of State Health Services Commissioner Eduardo Sanchez, M.D., received the John P. McGovern Award from the Texas School Health Association at the conference banquet. The award honors individuals for their contributions and distinguished service in the field of school health.

Awards for Excellence in Texas School Health are funded by the Texas Health Foundation.

'Excellence' award recipients of $1,500 were:

* Jacksonville Independent School District, Jacksonville, Family Walk Night

* Hawkins Independent School District, Hawkins, Laying the Foundation

* Hallsburg Independent School District, Waco, CATCH the Progress.

'Outstanding' award recipients of $1,000 were:

* Midland Independent School District, Midland, Junior High Health

* Plemons-Stinnett-Phillips Consolidated Independent School District, Stinnett, Employee Wellness.

Texas Pediatric Society Foundation Awards of Achievement of $1,000 went to:

* Little Cypress Mauriceville Consolidated Independent School District, Orange, Hit a Home Run for Health

* Whispering Oaks Charter School (formerly Cedar Ridge School), Lometa, Eagle Wellness Center

* Hawkins Independent School District, Hawkins, Laying the Foundation.

All Well Institute scholarships, funded by the Texas Health Foundation, went to Hallsburg Independent School District, Waco, CATCH the Progress; and Little Cypress Mauriceville Consolidated Independent School District, Orange, Hit a Home Run for Health.
